Sony WH-1000XM6 Review: Still the One to Beat

Headphones have come and headphones have gone, but Sony’s flagship wireless noise-canceling line has maintained its place at the top of buyers’ wishlists. With each iteration, Sony raises the bar, delighting audiophiles and casual listeners alike. The latest in the series the Sony WH-1000XM6 (hereafter referred to simply as the XM6) has landed, promising subtle yet meaningful improvements over its predecessor. But does it still live up to its reputation in an increasingly crowded market?

Design and Comfort: Familiar, Yet Refined

Sony hasn’t radically altered the design language for the WH-1000XM6, and that’s actually a smart move. The XM6 sports a streamlined, understated look that is both timeless and functional. The earcups are plush, wrapped in velvety-soft faux leather and memory foam, providing long-lasting comfort for extended listening sessions. A slightly redesigned headband offers improved flexibility and an even more ergonomic fit. These incremental tweaks help make an already comfortable pair of headphones even better, reducing fatigue during marathon meetings or travel days.

Features and Controls: No Compromises

Intuitive Touch Controls

Continuing Sony’s tradition, the XM6 features intuitive touch controls on the right earcup. You can play, pause, skip tracks, adjust volume, and answer calls with simple taps or swipes. Sony continues to refine gesture detection for fewer accidental activations.

Adaptive Noise Cancellation

The centerpiece of the XM6 is its industry-leading active noise cancellation. Utilizing Sony’s latest processor (QN2x), the headphones constantly analyze and adapt to your environment, blocking out more ambient noise than before. From the hum of airplane engines to the chatter in a bustling cafe, the XM6 delivers unrivaled serenity.

Multipoint Connectivity and Smart Features

Multipoint Bluetooth lets you connect to two devices simultaneously, making it seamless to switch between your phone and laptop without disconnecting. The XM6 also supports Google Assistant and Alexa, as well as Sony’s powerful companion app for EQ tweaks and firmware updates. Speak-to-Chat and Quick Attention mode return, pausing music when you talk and letting in outside sound when needed making everyday use much smoother.

Audio Quality: Superior Sound, Tailored to You

Signature Sony Clarity

Sony continues to excel in audio performance. The XM6 brings a balanced, roomy sound signature with punchy bass, clear mids, and sparkling highs. LDAC support means high-res audio for those with compatible devices. There’s also DSEE Extreme for upscaling compressed tracks, ensuring streaming services sound richer and fuller.

Customizable Listening Experience

Sony’s Headphones Connect app offers a robust equalizer, letting listeners customize their sound preferences. Whether you want head-thumping bass or reference-quality neutrality, the XM6 can oblige. In side-by-side tests, the improvements in clarity and instrument separation are subtle but noticeable compared to the XM5.

Battery Life: Non-Stop Listening

The XM6 offers up to 30 hours of playback with noise cancellation enabled, and quick-charge gives you 3 hours of listening from just 10 minutes of charging. This means you’re unlikely to run out of juice, even on transcontinental flights.

Call Quality: Meeting-Ready

Sony upgraded the microphones and voice processing in the XM6 for crisper, more natural calls. Whether you’re in the middle of the city or taking a call in your living room, voices come through with clarity and minimal background noise.

Price and Value: A Premium Pick

At launch, the Sony WH-1000XM6 retails for $399 USD. While not cheap, they offer a package that few, if any, wireless headphones can rival in this price range. You can buy the XM6 from reputable retailers like Amazon and Best Buy; prices may vary depending on sales and region.

Competition: Still Leading the Way

Rivals like the Bose QuietComfort Ultra and Apple AirPods Max still bring strong competition, particularly for brand loyalists or those seeking Apple ecosystem perks. Yet, the XM6 stands out with its unbeatable blend of noise-canceling performance, comfort, and customizable sound.

Verdict: The King Retains Its Crown

The Sony WH-1000XM6 secures its place as the best wireless noise-canceling headphones for the vast majority of users. Sony has taken a “don’t fix what isn’t broken” approach, focusing on refining fit, boosting call quality, and further improving noise cancellation. If you already own the XM5s, the upgrade may not be essential unless you want the absolute best. For everyone else, the XM6s are a clear first choice and the ones to beat in 2026.

Why an 8,000 Hz Gaming Mouse Can Make Your FPS Worse
If your game runs smoothly until you move the mouse rapidly, an 8,000 Hz polling setting may be contributing to the stutter. A high polling rate lets a mouse send more frequent movement reports, but some Windows games struggle to process all those updates efficiently. Before replacing your graphics card or blaming the mouse sensor,…
